Tax and Accounting Manager
Let’s get real. Most of us didn’t grow up dreaming of becoming tax accountants. However, we continue to find ourselves drawn to the role (and to excel at it) because we measure our success by that of our clients–the success they achieve, at least in part, thanks to our guidance and strategy. We understand that while income taxes are one of the biggest expenses of a business, business owners don’t exist just to pay taxes. We know the best tax planning is strategic, future-focused, and incorporates not just taxes, but all the elements of a client’s life and business plan. We relish the intellectual challenge of understanding the ever-changing Internal Revenue Code and using the intricacies inherent in that Code to our client’s benefit.
This is not your traditional tax manager position. We are looking for someone who sees the role of tax advisor as someone who helps their clients understand and achieve all of their goals--financial and otherwise.
If this describes you, then let’s talk.
+ Who we’re looking for
The person who joins us will have enough tax experience to have: received your CPA, EA, or LTC designation, be comfortable working with a wide range of entity types, be proficient in corporate, individual and partnership taxation, have real experience supervising and training staff (and enjoy doing so), have excellent written and verbal communication skills, have experience in successfully managing multiple client engagements, not be afraid to engage in business development, and have approximately 5+ years of experience.
Along with these core skills, our perfect candidate will:
- Be comfortable leading a skilled team (some locally based and some remotely based);
- Be goal oriented;
- Embrace diversity and inclusion;
- Love technology and prefer cloud accounting;
- Thrive at working in an unstructured environment; and
- Be intellectually curious.
Finally, our ideal candidate will join us on our path of intentionally choosing greatness every day by challenging the status quo, asking questions, providing insight and knowing that there is always a better way.
+ Our Story
Sherwood Tax combines the best of both worlds. We are a decade plus old CPA firm intensely focused on providing excellent customer service to our loyal cadre of small business clients throughout the Willamette Valley. At the same time, we have a clear eye toward the future of our industry, with an emphasis on technology, remote staff, flexible working hours, and an innovative compensation system. We have ambitious growth plans and are excited at the prospect of offering you a role that simply doesn’t exist at other firms (which we would be happy to share with you when we meet).
We are located in historic downtown Sherwood, Oregon, where you will enjoy the benefits of working in a small town with downtown Portland only 20 minutes away. Our work environment is casual and fun. We enjoy walking in the door and we want you to as well. While we can’t promise you that every day will be stress-free, we do everything we can to support each other and to eliminate the traditional “busy season” grind - and strive to find ways to ease that burden (which includes access to our own dedicated offshore team).
+ Compensation
The economics of a typical tax practice are pretty simple. The partners pay for overhead and people costs and keep what’s left. Salaries of associates and managers in firms become compressed when overhead gets out of control, the firm accepts clients who don’t value (and pay for) quality work, and/or partner’s earning outpace their value.
At Sherwood Tax we control for all three of these variables: we have clients who value and pay for the great work that we do, we maintain a low overhead, and our owners have reasonable profit expectations, which we also share with our team. We work with each of our team members to create a five year plan that incorporates your professional and economic goals and objectives which we use to determine your compensation. Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, but how much you earn will always be a two way conversation which starts with you and where you want to go with your career.
